DCGI set to remove drug combinations from chemists

In a sweeping move by the Drugs Controller General of India, or DCGI, about a hundred drug combinations may be ordered to be removed from chemist shelves all across the country. Because many of these drug combinations could be harmful, reports CNBC-TV18.

These drug combinations or a mix of more than two drugs are supposed to increase the overall efficacy of the medicine without causing any side effects. But the government health authorities have found that many of these drugs could be toxic in the long term for human consumption and have categorised them as irrational combinations.

At a meeting held between the industry associations and health authorities, it was decided that the government would categorise about 100 combinations in three parts.
