The first black economic empowerment clinical research organisation was launched in Johannesburg on Thursday.
Known as the African Clinical Research Organisation (Acro), it was formed through collaboration between LIFElab, the East Coast Biotechnology Innovation Centre and Batswadi Pharmaceuticals.
Acro would focus initially on research into infectious diseases such as HIV and Aids, tuberculosis and malaria, with other diseases to be added in due course.
Acro would serve the biotechnology sector, donor funded and non-governmental organisations, research institutions, pharmaceutical drug and medical device companies and the government.
Chief executive officer of LIFElab Blessed Okole said the launch of Acro was a turning point in South Africa's research and development.
