A lack of laws and regulations on clinical trials and medical research has put Thai people at risk of exploitation by pharmaceutical companies, doctors said. Most pharmaceutical firms based in developed countries now choose to conduct clinical human trials in developing countries where there are no stringent laws to control the practice, said Anek Aribarg, emeritus professor at Chulalongkorn University's faculty of medical sciences.
''The absence of laws regulating human trials is against the principle of human rights, and could put the lives of Thai patients at risk of being abused by unethical trials,'' Dr Anek said on the sidelines of a seminar on protecting human subjects yesterday.
